Healthcare Provider CPR

This course taught by American Heart Association BLS Instructors is designed to teach the skills of CPR for victims of all ages (including ventilation with a barrier device, a bag-mask device, and oxygen), use of automated external defibrillator (AED), and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO) to healthcare providers.  The textbook is optional.  Completion cards will be issued to those who successfully complete this course.

OLOL College students:         $35.00

All other registrants:                $50.00

Healthcare Provider Textbook available: $15.00

Healthcare Provider CPR Renewal

This course taught by American Heart Association BLS Instructors is designed to update those individuals holding a current Healthcare Provider CPR card and that feel confident with their skills. (You must have current AHA Healthcare Provider card.)

Heartsaver CPR – Adult Module

This course taught by American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Instructors is designed to teach Adult CPR and relief of choking (ages eight and above) to lay rescuers who are required to obtain a course completion card documenting successful completion of a CPR course.  It is popular with high school students, fitness center employees, and lifeguards.  The textbook is optional.  Completion cards will be issued to those who successfully complete this course.

Heartsaver CPR – Pediatric Module

This course taught by American Heart Association BLS Instructors is designed to teach infant (birth to one year) and child (age one to eight) CPR and relief of choking to lay rescuers who are required to obtain a course completion card documenting completion of a CPR course.  It is popular with daycare workers, elementary school teachers and day camp workers.  The textbook is optional.  Completion cards will be issued to those who successfully complete this course.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider Course (ACLS)

This two-day course is designed to teach the principles of ACLS and their practical application according to the standards and guidelines of the American Heart Association.

 

Day 1:  Group discussion, demonstration and teaching stations

Day 2:  Teaching stations, written exam, and megacode evaluations.  

 

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:  

  • Identify and describe the incidence and impact of sudden death.

  • Explain the roles of BLS and ACLS in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest.

  • Understand the proper technique for airway management, optimize ventilation, use of airway adjunct correctly and provide supplemental oxygen effectively.

  • Identify lethal and potentially lethal arrythmias and the hemodynamic consequences of arrythmias.

  • Understand when electrical defibrillation is needed, how to defibrillate safely and effectively, and how to perform cardioversion, synchronization and unsynchronization.

  • Describe the proper drugs utilized to prevent or treat arrythmias and relieve pain and anxiety.

  • Identify the proper drugs utilized to alter vascular tone as an inotrope and chronotrope for the heart.  

Prerequisites:  Current Healthcare Provider card plus core knowledge of ACLS, basic EKG interpretation and cardiac emergency medications.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support Provider Course (PALS)

This one and-a-half day course is designed to prepare participants to identify and treat cardiopulmonary arrest and common conditions that may lead to cardio-pulmonary arrest in infants and children.

 

Day 1: Lecture, skill stations, case scenario practice stations.

Day 2: Teaching stations, evaluation stations, written test.

 

Course Objectives  

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Provide pediatric BLS

  • Recognize impending respiratory failure and shock

  • Initiate treatment based on the patient’s physiologic status as identified by rapid cardiopulmonary assessment

  • Stabilize and evaluate the trauma victim

  • Identify and treat unstable rhythms

  • Initiate the first 10 minutes of pediatric resuscitation

  • Triage the patient to definitive care

  • Provide support for patients, families, and fellow providers in coping with a child’s critical illness, injury, and potential death.

Prerequisites:  Current Healthcare Provider CPR card which is to be shown on first day of course at registration.  Review textbook and complete pre-test before course.

Continuing Education

16.0 contact hours will be awarded for successful completion of this activity for first time participants and 4.8 contact hours for previous participants.  Our Lady of the Lake College has been approved as a provider of continuing education in nursing by the Louisiana State Nurses' Association for the period March 27, 2003 to March 31, 2006.  LSNA is accredited as an approver of continuing education in nursing by the American Nurses' Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

Cancellation Policy

A $25 fee will be charged for all refunds.  A refund will not be available if cancellation occurs within five (5) days of the program.  The College reserves the right to cancel any course if enrollment does not meet minimum registration requirements.
