Respiratory Therapy

Our lady of the Lake College’s Respiratory Therapy Program is designed to prepare the student for employment as a competent Licensed Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT).  Graduates of the program will be eligible to take the entry-level national board examination, which leads to the CRT credential, and will be eligible to apply for a license to practice respiratory therapy in the state of Louisiana. 

Practicing respiratory therapists work in a variety of environments, including hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, physicians’ offices, home health agencies, specialized care hospitals, medical equipment supply companies and patient’s homes. 

CURRICULUM 

The Associate Degree in Respiratory Therapy Program consists of (seventy) credit hours.  Forty (40) credit hours constitute the professional portion, which includes experience at various clinical sites in the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. 

 

ADMISSION 

Students who choose to purse admission into the Respiratory Therapy Program must: 

·         Have completed all prerequisites y the end of the fall semester proceeding the professional year. 

·         Have earned a minimum GPA of 2.0 on all college coursework attempted. 

·         Have earned minimum GPA of 2.5 in all prerequisite courses. 

·         Have earned grades of  “C” or better in all prerequisite courses. 

·         Submit a complete application to the Office of Admissions by August 15 of the year preceding the year of admission to the clinical phase. 

·         Have met with an advisor who is a member of the respiratory therapy faculty. 

A student who meets selection criteria is not guaranteed admission to the clinical phase (second year) of the Respiratory Therapy Program.  Selection is competitive and is limited by the faculty and clinical resources available to the program.  Qualification does not assure selection.  Students who are selected for admission to the clinical year will be notified by letter after August.  Applicants who are not selected must reapply the following year.   

Our Lady of the Lake College welcomes applications from all qualified individuals.  All transcripts are reviewed on an individual basis, according to College policy, in order to determine eligibility and placement in the program.  Equal educational opportunities are offered to all who meet entrance requirements, without regard to race, gender, ethnicity, creed, marital status or age. 

ENROLLMENT 

Students applying for admission to the Respiratory Therapy Program must complete (thirty) credit hours of pre-requisite courses in the humanities, social sciences and basic sciences of biology, chemistry, physics and microbiology.  A maximum of 15 students will be accepted each year.  Call (225) 768-1700 for application information. 

FINANCIAL AID 

The Our Lady of the Lake College Student Financial Aid Office is available to all applicants to discuss eligibility for financial assistance.  Please call (225) 768-1714 to schedule an appointment. 

Applicants are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.  Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical center also offers tuition reimbursement to qualifying employees.
