The purpose of the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Program at Our Lady of the Lake College is to provide the baccalaureate-prepared registered nurse with the competencies to function in the roles of nurse educator or nurse administrator. Graduate nursing education at Our Lady of the Lake College is dedicated to preparing nurses for advanced nursing practice and doctoral study by creating an academic environment that fosters scholarship, critical reflection, and creativity.

The MSN program at Our Lady of the Lake College is consistent with the guidelines set forth by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials of Master’s Education for Advanced Practice Nursing, as well as the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) Standards and Criteria for Master’s Degree Programs.

Options

There are two options within the MSN degree program: administrator and educator.

Administrator Track

The administration option prepares the graduate to apply leadership and management skills within health care organizations. Students develop expertise in resource allocation through lessons in continuous quality improvement, cost containment, free market competition, managed care, technology, diversity and a focus on ethical issues, as well as expertise in assessing and analyzing health care needs in the practice setting.

Educator Track

The education option prepares the graduate to apply teaching-learning theory, principles of curriculum development, evaluation methodology and role specialization as a nurse educator in various settings, including health care organizations, public and private schools, and institutions of higher learning.

Enrollment

Applicants to this program in the School of Nursing must complete an application specific to the MSN program. Applications are due on or before June 15 for the August class.

Length of Program

The program consists of 30 credit hours. A full-time student can complete the program in four semesters.

Financial Assistance

Our Lady of the Lake College has financial aid counselors available to assist students with the financial aid process. All students are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form available at www.fafsa.ed.gov. See Financial Aid for more details.

Transferability

Transfer credit for graduate courses from other institutions will be accepted according to college policy. Students may be allowed to transfer up to six credit hours to be used toward the MSN degree.
