Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who is my academic advisor?

A: Upon admission to Our Lady of the Lake College you should call the Academic Advising Office to request an advising appointment.  All efforts are made to assign you to an advisor in your area of interest.

Q: When should I see my advisor?

A: All new students, re-entry students, students on probation, non-matriculating students, and students who are going into their last semester before graduation must see an advisor in order to pre-register or register.

Q: How often should I see my advisor?

A: Upon successful completion of one semester, a student in good standing may obtain a Pre-registration Workbook and schedule classes either via the internet or by filling out the Pre-registration worksheet and submitting it to the Office of the Registrar.  Students are encouraged to see an advisor in their program of interest before applying to that program.

Q: When does academic advising begin?

A: Academic advising begins mid-March for the Summer and Fall semesters and mid-October for the Spring semester.

However, you may contact the Academic Advising Office at any time to make an appointment with your advisor.

Q: What do I need to bring with me to my advising appointment?

A: Pre-Registration workbooks and worksheets are available at no charge in each building on campus.  The Schedule of Classes is posted on this website on the Calendar page and the Advising Sheets may be download from the Advising Sheet page.

Q: Can I change my major and advisor?

A: Yes.  The Academic Advising Office has the forms.

Q: Who can I contact if I am experiencing academic or personal problems that are affecting my studies?

A: The Office of Counseling Services has two full-time counselors to assist in these areas. You may call Dr. Jacque Crehan at 768-1713 for assistance.

Q: How do I calculate my grade point average?

A: Each letter grade has a numeric value.  Grade points are based on this number value and the credit hour value of the course:

A = 4

B = 3    B+ = 3.5

C = 2    C+ = 2.5

D = 1    D+ = 1.5

F = 0

Assume you are registered for 13 credit hours and receive the following grades in these courses:

Academic Seminar  A

English                   B

Algebra                   B

Sociology                C

Philosophy              D

Course         Credit     Grade     Credit Carried    Credit Earned    Quality Pts.

ACSM 100     1            A                  1                       1                         4

English          3            B                  3                       3                         9

Algebra          3            B                  3                       3                         9

Sociology       3            C                  3                       3                         6

Philosophy     3            D                  3                       3                         3

Add the total Credits (hours) Carried = 13

Add the total Quality Points =  31

Divide the Quality Points by the Total Credit Carried = 2.38

Q: I have questions about transfer credit.  Whom do I contact?

A: The Academic Advising Office will evaluate your college transcript upon admission and complete an Academic History Record that will be mailed to you and a copy given to your advisor.

Q: May I e-mail my advisor if I have questions?

A: Yes. Go to the Directory page for a complete listing of e-mail addresses and phone numbers.
